We are aiming to build an understanding of acoustic monitoring across New Zealand – both internally and externally to DOC.
We would like to understand how individuals and organisations are undertaking acoustic monitoring and what their current needs and challenges are. We are looking for direction regarding what, if any, tools should be researched and developed to better support acoustic monitoring programmes across the country.
Our acoustic monitoring survey has now closed. Thanks to everyone that took part.
We are putting together a report of our findings. The report will be posted on this page when it is complete.
Purpose of the assessment
Several challenges and limitations with regards to acoustic recording devices (ARDs) have been raised in recent years.
In response to these challenges, DOC is keen to understand how individuals and organisations are undertaking acoustic monitoring and what their individual monitoring needs are.
It is expected that the needs assessment will provide DOC with direction regarding what, if any, tools should be researched and developed. Through collaboration with others (universities, consultancies, etc) we expect to be in a better position to support acoustic monitoring programmes across the country.
Who should be involved?
Those already using acoustic recording devices should be involved.
If you are using ARDs as part of your monitoring programme, we would like to hear from you. This includes those involved with monitoring birds, bats, marine mammals, anthropogenic noise, industrial noise, etc.
Those who have considered or are interested in using ARDs.
If you are interested in using ARDs as part of your monitoring programme, but have faced challenges that have prevented you from doing so – we would like to hear from you.
